Related Companies, a real estate development firm, has revealed a new vision for its proposed casino in Hudson Yards. Wynn Resorts CEO Jeff Blau told the New York Post that a 10-billion-dollar development project, which would include a hotel to fulfil the area's strong demand for lodging, would kick off with the building of the Wynn Resorts tower.
"It will be one of the most incredible tall buildings in New York City," Blau allegedly said.
According to the source, the proposed construction gives Related Companies and Wynn a leg up in the competition for a casino licence a few months before a final decision is made on the approval of the downstate casino licence. The New York Post reports that the skyscraper will have a 250,000-square-foot casino featuring games including blackjack, poker, and roulette, as well as high-end eateries and retail outlets.
Blau reportedly announced the unexpected addition of a 2 million square foot office tower for the undeveloped portion of Hudson Yards, in addition to the public green park, public school for the area, and a 1 million square foot rental apartment tower with 329 housing units marketed as "affordable."
The CEO was quoted as saying, "Given these factors, we are confident that our proposal is the best." We are in this to win it. With just one licence available for a casino in the state's lower mainland this year, Related Companies and Wynn have teamed together to compete for it. Two further licences are anticipated to be granted to "racinos" in Aqueduct and Yonkers. Since other licence bidders are having trouble with their proposed facilities, Blau is confident.
Indeed, a Queens legislator recently rejected the casino and entertainment complex plan of frontrunner Steve Cohen. Bally's is having trouble securing land leases in the Bronx, which is hampering the operator's plans to open a casino there. In addition, Legends (the Yankees' partnership) faces stiff opposition from local authorities as it seeks to build a casino on Coney Island.
According to the Post, Related Companies' primary rival for the licence is currently Sands. The company's plan to construct a casino on Long Island has recently won widespread support from locals and appears to be on the verge of overcoming all opposition.
"While there are still hurdles to overcome," Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman told The Post, "the overwhelming bipartisan approval of the lease transfer to the Sands puts Nassau County one step closer to opening what will be one of the finest resorts, entertainment centres, and casinos in the world."
Although Related has removed some roadblocks to the Hudson Yards development, they have not eliminated all of them. State Senator Brad Hoylman, who is part of the six-member site review board that will vote on whether or not the proposal will advance to the next round of the casino selection process, has reportedly disregarded the previously-promised amenities and said that the revised proposal represents " a steep hill to climb."
However, the corporation is keeping a positive outlook and believes that Hoylman will change his mind after he sees the 1,700-room hotel construction project. The Post reports that Related Companies places considerable stock in the fact that the company's owner, Steve Ross, is one of Gov. Kethy Hochul's largest contributors.
According to reports, Related should be the clear favourite in July's round of casino selection due to the considerations highlighted by CEO Blau. The state's Gaming Commission is scheduled to make a final decision by the end of the year, with the final plans due in the autumn. The developer's expectations of joining the other two licensees and contributing the estimated $1.5 billion to the state budget have allegedly been bolstered by the fact that Gov. Kethy Hochul controls the Gaming Commission.
