A strong push by BCLC to make single-game sports betting legal

The Canadian regulator for lotteries, the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC), allegedly lobbied federal politicians to approve upcoming legislation that would make sports betting on individual games legal across the country.

According to a research by SBCAmericas, sports betting fans in British Columbia have just two options for gambling on individual events: unregulated websites or crossing the border into Washington state. According to the source, the BCLC estimates that it could gain up to $136 million in yearly income from attracting more players to its own PlayNow.com domain if such activities were legalised.

Good government:

The BCLC is a government-run organisation that purportedly made over $1 billion in a single fiscal year. The group is then obligated to utilise the money to protect against problem gambling and money laundering while also contributing to local health, education, and community programmes.

Moral imperative:

The BCLC's eGaming Director, Stewart Groumoutis, allegedly issued a statement urging the 338 members of the House of Commons to vote in favour of Bill C-13, which would legalise single-game sportsbetting across the country. In addition to the monetary incentive, he reportedly stated that the move will enable his company to launch a new suite of locally licenced online and land-based sports wagering services with a focus on player safety.
